The suspension was caused by confusion over new US customs regulations that have made US-bound air carriers unwilling to transport mail from India.
Reason for the suspension
New US Customs Regulations: An executive order by the US administration requires duties to be collected on goods valued over $100 starting August 29, 2025. Carriers delivering international postal items are required to collect and remit these duties.
Lack of Clarity: The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has not yet issued the full set of rules for this new process. Crucial details, such as how carriers can become 'qualified parties' to collect duties, are still undefined.
Carriers Refuse Shipments: Due to the lack of clear guidelines and operational procedures, US-bound air carriers stopped accepting postal consignments from India after August 25, 2025. This forced India Post to suspend its service.
